Sunday I had the pleasure of trying the new vintages at Prince of Salm-Dalberg'sches winery. It is Germany's oldest family-owned winery. Over eight hundred years and 32 generations of unbroken wine growing family tradition go into every bottle. Specialised in Riesling they offer several well crafted variations, reflecting the unique character of the terroir around Wallhausen (Nahe valley). A geological cocktail, vines grow on rare green slate in addition to clay, gravel , sand, loess and quartzite. The valuable "Rotliegende" (red slate) gives a nice glow to the vineyards.
The family has a nice philosophy, "wine is not made in the cellar, but outside in the vineyard." Nature, soil and grapevines are the focus of the families daly work. The respectful treatment is rewarded with a unique natural product. In doing so, they rely on the forces of nature, ensuring well-cared-for soils, vital vines, reduced yields and healthy grapes.
