Rolling down the winding narrow roads with steep cliffs edging the hips of the road we were wondering if we missed the turn off. Luckily it was very much the opposite. At the very last dip and turn an old wine barrel signed Rielingerhof appeared with glimpses of the farm houses. Nestled in amongst the vineyard slopes with breathtaking views across the green valleys of Südtirol and out to the Dolomites.
We received a warm welcome not just from the human kind but also from all it’s furry friends.
We spent a week at this Weinhof (farmstay) from the 13th century and we’re made to feel truly welcome by our humble hosts Evi & Matthias. They aren’t trying to follow any organic trends in sustainable farming, cooking or winemaking. This is just the way they have been brought up to run their farm. Grow and use seasonal product, waste not want not, everything goes from the farm to table and then back again. A farm with its own self sufficient eco system, farms pigs and rabbits left to help dispose of leftovers. Evi, runs the kitchen cooking rustic wholesome Tyrolean food using produce from their farm or surrounding farmers. She mills her own flour to bake Schüttelbrot from scratch. The milk which she uses to make her own cheese, yogurt and quark comes from their cows which roam the Rittner Horn. Always a pleasant suprise to open our front door to find a basket of morning fresh produce for breakfast
Making organic wine was always the way for Matthias. Learning it from his father he does little to tamper with them in the cellar. With mainly nature dictating the vintage. The result are pure and clean wines with the distinct accents of the grape variety.
The house is perfectly situated for some adventures into the mountains. It’s a favourite pitstop for hikers along the rigorous chesnut track, bringing in many wanderers for well deserved vino, a view and an antipasto or a more wholesome ragu.
With all our heart we appreciated the hospitality from the family of the Rielingerhof. We will definitely be back sometime soon! Pfiat-di!
